What to Pack for Lisbon: How to Survive the Seven Hills

The Golden Rule: Respect the Calçada (Portuguese Cobblestone)

Lisbon is one of Europe’s most beautiful capitals, but it is also one of the steepest. The city is famous for its gorgeous white limestone cobblestone streets (calçada portuguesa). While stunning, this stone becomes incredibly slick over time—even when perfectly dry in the peak of August.

If you are packing for your summer trip, leave your high heels and slippery dress shoes at home. The absolute best choice is a pair of supportive sneakers with excellent grip.

Dressing for Lisbon's Microclimates

Summer in Lisbon is hot and bright, often reaching over 85°F (30°C) during the day. However, because of our proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, a cool breeze sweeps through the city as soon as the sun sets.

  • Daytime: Light linen clothing, polarized sunglasses, a hat, and plenty of sunscreen are non-negotiable.

  • Evening: Always pack a light denim jacket or a cardigan. If you visit a rooftop bar or a viewpoint (miradouro) at sunset, you will need it.

Experience the City at a Slower Pace

Exploring Lisbon in the summer heat can be exhausting. If you want to experience the authentic fabric of the city without battling the uphill crowds on Tram 28, a local culinary experience is the perfect balance.

At The Chefs Company, we take you on a morning stroll through a traditional residential neighborhood food market during our Market Experience Cooking Class. You will see where locals shop, select fresh ingredients with two native chefs, and then retreat into our air-conditioned boutique studio to cook and enjoy a 3-course lunch. It is the ultimate insider way to spend a summer day in Lisbon.
